Mail/DNS Problem
Posted by efriese, 03-28-2008, 05:01 PM I'm having problems sending email to a particular domain. I get back the following error: Sorry, I couldn't find any host by that name. (#4.1.2) I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long. I've tried using dig to get the mx record, but it says that it can't find the host. I tried using dig from another server at a different location and I got the record. The domain is on yahoo hosting, so I tried digging yahoo.com and got a response. I called my dedicated server provider (1and1) and they are saying it is a problem with Yahoo and not their DNS servers. This is the first time I've run into a problem like this. Any ideas?
Posted by Panopta, 03-28-2008, 05:12 PM It sounds like it's a problem with your caching DNS servers that your server is using, but it might also be a problem with the DNS servers for the domain. Can you share the domain in question with us? That'd help with the diagnosis.

Posted by Panopta, 03-28-2008, 05:59 PM It looks like there are some problems with the DNS setup at Yahoo - see http://www.checkdns.net/quickcheck.a...net&detailed=1 for details. In certain, it looks like mail is being deferred on both of their MX servers. However, after repeated attempts mail should be able to get through. Does a dig from your server return results for any type of record?
Posted by efriese, 03-28-2008, 06:06 PM I can't get any records on my dedicated server. The dig error is: ; <<>> DiG 9.2.3 <<>> any themooreagency.net ;; global options: printcmd ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached I've tried this on a local server and I get the records correctly.
Posted by Panopta, 03-28-2008, 06:07 PM If you can't get any results, that sounds like the caches are misconfigured - check with your hosting provider to make sure you've got the right caching servers. If not, it's a problem with the actual caching DNS servers.
Posted by efriese, 03-28-2008, 06:17 PM You could be right, but it's odd that this happens only on this one domain. I can dig yahoo.com and get records, but not this domain hosted on yahoo. I've talked to the dedicated server provider and, of course, they blamed it on yahoo. I've tried to find a way of contacting yahoo, but so far no joy.
