Configuring pureFTPd on a VPS
Posted by eta aquarii, 03-27-2008, 02:32 PM Hi, I'm trying to install and configure pureFTPD on my VPS which I just got. I'm kind of a unix shell noob... Right, here goes one of my stupid questions: When I try to start pure-ftpd (with the command /usr/sbin/pure-ftpd & ), this is what I get: What does [1] 20271 mean (or it may be other random number)? And I can't see pure-ftpd as a running process (ps -ef command). So what's happening, how do I start pure-ftpd properly? It is installed as far as I understand.
Posted by tix3, 03-27-2008, 02:34 PM What is the OS of the server?Do you have any control panel?Did you compile pureFTPd from source?
Posted by eta aquarii, 03-27-2008, 02:55 PM It's Debian 4.0 ("etch"). I do have Webmin and by the way there was a built-in ftp server - proFTPD - with a GUI but I didn't like it. I don't think I compiled pure-ftpd. What exactly is compiling a package in linux shell? I followed a tutorial, something like this one here: debian-administration.org/articles/383 I used apt-get to install pure-ftpd
Posted by tix3, 03-27-2008, 03:05 PM If you dont like proftpd you would have to uninstall it. Then follow the tutorial you have linked and you should be ok.
Posted by eta aquarii, 03-27-2008, 03:39 PM I did uninstall proftpd. The problem is, when I try to start pureftpd nothing happens. Is this the right way to start a program: And this is the output I get: And I assume pure-ftpd should appear as a process shouldn't it? It doesn't. Thanks
Posted by tix3, 03-27-2008, 03:48 PM Well the tutorial says you would have to issue isnt it? If you want to follow tutorials you will have to follow them all the way. If you think you cannot make it i strongly reccomend to get a manage company.
Posted by eta aquarii, 03-28-2008, 08:04 AM I did try that command but when I was trying to install and configure pureftpd in the first instance, I was following another tutorial. ...doesn't provide any output whatsoever, and just like any other command or variation of this command, doesn't start the pureftpd process.
